Pioneer Project Traces Artesia’s History

The Studio for Southern California History is pleased to announce a new community history project: the Pioneer Project: Histories of Artesia.
In collaboration with college students working at the Studio over the 2011 summer, this project will trace the history of this significant community through oral interviews, newspaper researches, and mapping of significant events in the history of Artesia, California. The histories gathered through the Pioneer Project: Histories of Artesia will provide insights into the dynamic urban history of this neighborhood--as alfalfa fields in the late 19th century, to Dutch and Portuguese dairy farms in the early 20th century, to a nexus for first generation immigrants following the 1965 Immigration Act for Southeast Asians and now representing one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Southern California.
