The first product of a new collaboration between L.A. as Subject and public television station KCET is now live. L.A. as Subject's first post on KCET's SoCal Focus blog illustrates how the archives of Southern California's cultural institutions and private collectors inform the story of regional boosters.

Beginning in the 1890s, promoters of Southern Californians used the region's mild Mediterranean climate and idyllic scenes of orange groves to sell Los Angeles as a sun-blanketed paradise. Their efforts were successful, as the city's population ballooned from 50,395 in 1890 to over 1.2 million in 1930.

It features images from several L.A. as Subject members, including the Braun Research Library at the Autry National Center, the David Boulé Collection, the Los Angeles Public Library, the Urban Archives Center at CSUN's Oviatt Library, and the USC Digital Library.
